In 1919, Mario Buccellati founded his business in Milan, after learning the ropes as a metal apprentice. The son of a goldsmith, Mario studied and employed techniques that can be traced back to the Italian Renaissance. As Mario’s talent and collection grew, his work gained acclaim, and it particularly appealed to Spanish aristocrats as well as the British royal family. After bringing his collections across Europe, Buccellati hopped the pond in the 1950s to make its first appearance on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Today, Buccellati is owned and operated by Mario’s descendants, and the atelier still uses the same techniques that first made Mario’s designs so eye-catching, creating Buccellati designs by hand in workshops in Italy, near Milan, Florence, and Venice.
